Whether your home is a grand palace or a humble cottage, you and your family can benefit from good feng shui.
The Importance of Proportions

Feng shui principles advocate balances and harmony, which in turn creates good chi in the house. For example, as much as possible, the main building of the house should be located in the center of the plot of land. In dark areas and protruding areas of the compound, make sure to install lights as dark areas promote the accumulations of bad chi.
Positioning of Doors

Generally all doors in the house should face your personal auspicious direction. There are also some taboos that should be avoided at all cost when positioning your door. For one, the doors in your house should not directly face another door, whether it’s the door of another room and of another house. When two doors face each other, there will be a clash of chi, which will evoke arguments and unrest between the inhabitants of the two rooms.
The other taboo is to have your main door face a junction or crossroads, as they are considered to be potent poison arrows. Dwellings with their main doors facing such directions will suffer from bad feng shui, which may led to accidents, bad fortunes and even death sometimes. If you have a door facing a junction, seal the door and relocated it to a different place.
Interiors of the House

Exposed beams on the ceiling is a popular trend in interior design today. As aesthetically pleasing as it may be, exposed beams on ceilings can bring misfortune to the inhabitants. If your home has some exposed overhead beams, if its not possible to remove them, hang some wind chimes under the beams to soften its harmful effects.
The home’s interior should also be free of sharp protruding angles as much as possible. Glass shelves or bookcases should be carefully placed to hide its sharp edges.
It would also be useful to keep the house neat and tidy. Clutter, filth and dirt will cause the chi to stagnate in the area and accumulation of bad chi
Staircases.

Staircases should be wide and gently curving. Spiral staircases are not desirable as they resemble a corkscrew, and are extremely harmful if placed in the middle of the house.
Feng shui guidelines also strenuously warn that staircases should never start directly in front of the main door. It should be ideally out of view from the main door.
Room Shapes

Ideally, all rooms should be either square or rectangular. Odd shaped rooms restricts the flow of energy, which can be harmful to the people in the room. When it comes to furniture arrangement, make sure that the furniture are evenly placed over the room for balanced.
Bathrooms

1. The bathroom means so many things to so many people. For some, the toilet is where you go to take care of your ‘business’, but for others the bathroom is a place of rest and rejuvenation after a long day’s work. In feng shui, the bathroom plays little role in enhancing your life aspirations, but if placed inauspiciously, can bring bad luck to the home. Here is a list of feng shui taboos to observe when it comes to your home’s bathroom. Wherever you place your bathroom, you should never place a bathroom in the Southwest and Northwest areas in the house. This is because the southwest corresponds with the Matriarch of the home whilst the Northwest corresponds with the Patriarch of the home. In a household, the luck of the patriarch and matriarch, or mother and father of the household is the most important as they provide for and support the whole family.
2. The size of the bathroom, or to be more specific the toilet bowl area should be as small as possible. The toilet is where waste gets flushed away, and in feng shui, if the toilet is too big, it may flush away good luck and chi. If possible, the bathing area and the toilet should be located in different rooms separated by a door. This way, your bathing area can be as big as you with.
3. The toilet bowl should never ever be in view from the front door of the house, the kitchen nor the bed in your room. The toilet bowl emits harmful chi and is best kept as discreet as possible.
4. In feng shui, the main door is considered to be one of the most important sectors of the house. The main door should enjoy good feng shui so as to attract lots of luck in the house. If you live in a house or apartment with two stories, never have a bathroom right above the main door. This would flush all good luck away. If this is so in your home, you Must either relocate the bathroom or the main door immediately.

Swimming Pools

Generally, having water features in your garden is very auspicious and creates good feng shui as water represents wealth. Nevertheless, water features can pose a treat to the house if not done according to feng shui guidelines. Here are some tips to be aware of when you have decided to install a pond or swimming pool in your home.
1) Keep the water of the pool clean. The water of the pond and the pool should always be well maintained. Murky and dirty water creates bad feng shui that can bring back luck to the home.
2) Oversized ponds and pools are a big no-no! You may love to swim and have a gigantic swimming pool in your back yard, but the truth is, in feng shui, big swimming pools and ponds can be very dangerous for the house. The size of the pool should be in proportion to the building of your house. When the pool is too big, the yin energy generated by the water will be too strong and can overwhelm the house and its inhabitants, causing bad luck and misfortunes.
3) If you live in an apartment building, make sure that the swimming pool is not situated on top of the apartment building. This is a big feng shui taboo because having so much water on top will ‘drown’ the people who are living of the building.
The Kitchen

The kitchen is one of the spaces at home that we use very often. In feng shui, the kitchen is also an important place as it is associated with food, abundance and wealth. There are tones of wonderful feng shui tips that you can use to enhance kitchen
1) First, you should note the location of your kitchen. If possible, it should be located deep into the house. It should never be in the front area of the home, and definitely should not be visible front the main door. In feng shui, the kitchen generates wealth energy, so if it is near the front door, the wealth energy created escapes. For good feng shui the kitchen should be located towards the back of the home.
2) One of the fashionable trends in interior designs for kitchen is to hand the pots and pans out in the open. To create good feng shui, the kitchen should be kept clean and tidy. Kitchen utensils, especially knives and other sharp objects should be kept inside the cabinets. Such objects emits harmful shar chi (killing energy)
3) The position of the stove in the kitchen should be of such where when you are cooking in front of it, your back is facing a wall.
4) Auspicious colors for the kitchen are reds and yellows
Around Your Home

Feng shui is not just confined to the interiors of your home. Traditionally, feng shui in ancient China was used more to choose a right spot for the location of the home, rather than just arranging furniture pieces. If your home is located in a spot where is geography is unsound from a feng shui point of view, no amount of good feng shui inside the home can remedy the effect. Here are some basic feng shui tips on the terrain and land around your home.
Firstly, it is extremely bad luck for you house to be below road level. A household in such homes is vulnerable to bad luck and misfortune in their finances. If you are leaving in such a home, it is best to move out. If that is not possible, try to renovate your home, so that at least one floor is above or at road level. Important parts of the house such as your bedroom, living room and home office are to be situated on the floor that is at road level. Alternatively, you should relocate your main door to an area of the house where it is at or higher than road level.
Hills are great places to live, as there is a constant flow of chi along the slopes. But always be wary of steep and sharply pointed hills. Such hills are not considered auspicious, as they emit a lot of shar chi (killing energy). Rounded and gently sloping hills are extremely good feng shui. Make sure that your house is built with the hill behind the house. It is also better feng shui to have the house in the middle of the hill slopes rather than on top of the hills.
