It Chinese believe that our environment is governed by five elements: Water, fire, metal, earth and wood. In feng shui, it is important to understand the interactions between the elements to create auspicious chi and activated your luck. Each direction of the compass is dominated by an element. The understanding of the five elements will help you activate the luck for each sector.

There are three main cycles involving the five elements: The productive cycle and the destructive cycle.
The Productive cycle:
Water produces Wood
Wood produces Fire
Fire produces Earth
Earth produces Metal
Metal produces Water
The Destructive Cycle:
Water destroys Fire
Fire destroys Metal
Metal destroys Wood
Wood destroys Earth
Earth destroys Water
The Exhaustive Cycle:
Wood Exhausts Water
Water Exhausts Metal
Metal Exhausts Earth
Earth Exhausts Fire
Fire Exhausts Wood
As mentioned before the key to good feng shui is a balance of all these elements. If a space is dominated by an element, lets say water, it is good to balance it out with the other elements. Be mindful though of the destructive cycle. You wouldn’t want to put too much fire element in the water sector as water destroys fire creating a clash of energies. Instead place some wood elements to exhaust the water element instead.
